The Department of Animal Health and Public Veterinary Services is responsible for safeguarding the
health and well-being of animals and ensuring public health in relation to veterinary services. It plays a crucial role in promoting animal welfare, preventing and controlling the spread of animal diseases, and ensuring the safety of animal-derived products.

The department has five sections: Central Veterinary Laboratory, Epidemiology and Data Management,
Livestock and Livestock Products Export/Import Certification, Public Veterinary Services, and

Specific Duties and Responsibilities include

 Disease Surveillance and Control

 The department is responsible for monitoring and detecting animal diseases, both infectious and non-infectious, through effective surveillance systems.

 Animal Health Promotion

To ensure the well-being of animals by guiding proper animal husbandry practices and preventive healthcare measures through a range of initiatives, including educational programs, awareness campaigns, and veterinary services.

 Emergency Preparedness and Response

The department prepares and responds to emergencies affecting animals. It plans, coordinates, and supports response efforts to protect animal health and public safety.

About Quarantines Department

The Department of Quarantine is responsible t is under the jurisdiction of the whole country and the
agreements entered into with the countries that take livestock from our country and the conditions to
be agreed upon It is under the control of organizations or traders of animal feed in the whole country
which is in accordance with the international law because we are one country and also responsible for
the communication between Livestock Traders and the ministry.

The department has Eight sections: Office of the Laws Division for Order Processing and Record
Keeping, The Office of investigation of animal health, Laboratory office, Animal Rest and Nutrition
Office, Livestock Marketing Office, Livestock Certification Office, Office of doctors and port assistants,
Business liaison office.

Principle Responsibilities

The livestock market plays an important role in the economy of Somalia, especially the income from
exports. The livestock market sector is central to the economic and cultural life of the Somali people.

  • Activities on Transboundary Animal Disease (TAD'S) that can cause decrease in the export.
  •  Promotion of economic growth and employment in the Livestock sector.
  • Development of livestock and livestock products marketing.
  • Providing shelter to livestock and their owners due to the value of livestock.
  • Establishing water points for animals in animal markets and feedlots to prevent stress
  •  Provides animal export certificate
  •  It is responsible for all certificates for the export of livestock to Somalia
  •  Preparation of balanced animal nutrition, quality and quantity, looking at the species and age of
    the animals.
  • Preparation of clean water that is proven not to harm the health of animals.
  • There are doctors and Auxiliaries’ who specialize in the laboratory technique of studying animal
    diseases, especially those that cross borders, and they use modern equipment and techniques
    that allow them to perform their duties.
  •  Observing the general health of animals entering the Quarantine, keeping a close watch for
    signs of ill health and also gave treatment, vaccination, Deworming and taking blood sample.
  • Processing of applications for Exporting Livestock
  •  Ensuring compliance with the laws and international requirements of the order coming from the
    country of the countries to which the livestock is exported.
